Archetype Guide

Arknights has a large number of classes and subclasses, possibly to the extent of being confusing for new players. To add to the confusion, there weren't official subclass names until fairly recently, so there's a lot of information that uses fan-designated names that might not line up with the official ones. This is an attempt to address all of that.

Snipers

Snipers are the Physical damage-based ranged DPS archetype. Many of them have lower DP costs so they can be deployed early along with your vanguards.

Marksmen

Trait: Attacks aerial enemies first
Also known as: Anti-air snipers
Difficulty: Beginner

Marksman snipers are primarily used for their drone priority, but they can also dispatch a wide variety of other enemies fairly quickly. They have a somewhat low attack stat that they compensate for with fast attack speed. They have the lowest DP cost of the snipers, so they're usually responsible for DPS duties early in a map.

Artillerymen

Trait: Deals AOE Physical Damage
Also known as: AOE snipers
Difficulty: Beginner

AOE snipers have relatively high base attack and can do splash damage. They're some of the more expensive snipers, but they have a bigger attack range (3x5 at E2) that allows them to be placed safely away from enemy fire late in a battle. They're a good choice for large groups of enemies with low defense that come too fast for Marksmen to deal with.

Deadeyes

Trait: Prioritizes attacking the enemy with lowest DEF within range first
Also known as: Long-range snipers
Difficulty: Intermediate

Deadeye snipers have a very large attack range, high base attack, and targeting priority that forces them to attack the lowest-defense enemy in range first. This makes them a great choice for taking out dangerous ranged enemies from afar since many of them have low defense. They can also do a fair amount of damage against higher-defense enemies because their attack stat is so high. However, in situations where you're dealing with a lot of mob enemies, Marksmen are usually a better choice because Deadeyes attack very slowly.

Heavyshooters

Trait: High accuracy point-blank shot
Also known as: Short-range snipers
Difficulty: Intermediate-advanced

Heavyshooters (not to be confused with Besiegers, who prioritize heavy enemies) have relatively high attack, but pay for it with relatively high DP cost, a small range, and slow attack speed. However, their single-target DPS is among the highest there is in the snipers, and they can do a number even on high-defense enemies due to their high attack stat and, for many of them, ability to ignore defense.

Spreadshooters

Trait: Attacks all enemies within range, and deals 150% damage to enemies in the row directly in front of this unit
Also known as: Boomstick snipers
Difficulty: Intermediate-advanced

Spreadshooter snipers have high attack and attack all targets in their range, which happens to be quite small. They do even more damage to enemies that pass through the row directly to their front, which makes them an excellent choice for single-lane chokepoints. They can be difficult to use because they attack pretty slowly and have the highest DP cost of the snipers (though this is mitigated by their good defense and HP). They shine in situations where there are several tough enemies approaching your frontline at once, as they can attack all of them (and whatever mobs that get mixed in) and do a lot of damage.

Besiegers

Trait: Attacks the heaviest enemy first
Also known as: Heavyweight snipers
Difficulty: Advanced

Besieger snipers specialize in taking down tough enemies from a distance with their unique attack range and extremely high base attack. Since they prioritize heavy enemies, you'll need some other form of DPS to deal with everything else. Their targeting priority can also be unpredictable because some enemies are heavier than they look (or vice versa). If there are no heavy enemies for them to deal with, they can take down lower-defense enemies very easily as well, and their range allows you to put them in places where no other operators would be able to go.

Flingers

Trait: Attacks deal two instances of Physical damage to ground enemies in a small area (The second instance is a shockwave that has half the normal ATK)
Also known as: Aftershock snipers
Difficulty: Advanced

Flinger snipers can only attack ground enemies, unlike everyone else in their archetype. They have good attack and decent defense, and they have AOE attacks that hit twice, which are very effective against low-defense mobs. Their large attack range means they can often deal with multiple lanes at once. However, they struggle against enemies with higher defense because their attack isn't nearly as high as Deadeyes or Besiegers, and their "aftershock" hits only deal half damage.
